LESSONS FROM TECHNO

Melisa Liebenthal
Germany

An autobiographical, self-deprecating essay about a filmmaker who questions her identity after being repeatedly turned away from Berghain.

SYNOPSIS

A young Argentine filmmaker arrives in Berlin to advance her career and settle with her boyfriend. Her first film once brought her recognition, making her feel she had made it. But a few rejections at Berghain, the iconic techno club, shatter that fragile self-image. Struggling financially and creatively, she becomes obsessed with appearances and belonging. Amidst her confusion, she begins to question her desires and her conventional relationship. Lessons from Techno is an essay film reflecting with humour on the meaning of “being someone”.

INTENTION

“When she arrived in the city, she still felt like she was somebody.”

Lessons from Techno is a documentary essay in the vein of my previous films The Pretty Ones (Las Lindas) and Here and There (Aquí y Allá), in which I also work on the topic of identity. Here I make a character of myself and tell my story since moving to Berlin six years ago, in order to reflect on the ambitions, aspirations, and frustrations of a very specific (and ridiculed) segment of Berlin’s society: expat millennials. Who are we and where do we find purpose? As in my previous projects, I want to tell this story with a lighthearted yet critical and self-deprecating sense of humor, examining how we create images of ourselves, whether enlarged or diminished, and acknowledging the need to break free from them in order to live more sincerely. I want to address the vanity and narcissism that lie behind certain notions of success and failure, and the tricky concept of being someone. I believe that, ultimately, these questions are about where we find meaning in our existence.
