CHILDREN OF SUAD

Guilt-ridden for a stray cat’s lost kittens, elderly Palestinian woman Aisha seeks her a new mate, revealing class divides under occupation.

SYNOPSIS

Aisha, a 77-year-old Palestinian woman, causes the disappearance of the kittens of a stray cat that had given birth in her home. Consumed with guilt, she becomes convinced that the best she can do for the cat is to find her a new mate. Together with her friend Khitam (62), Aisha sets out on a journey that gradually reveals the class divisions, social codes, and everyday contradictions shaping life in occupied Palestine.

INTENTION

Through this film, I explore everyday life through the eyes of Aisha, an elderly woman whose perspective feels increasingly old-fashioned in the face of changing values and beliefs, revealing generational gaps, questions of identity, and social tensions shaped by the occupation. Many situations are deeply absurd, and it is this absurdity that allows humor to emerge, even in harsh and painful realities. This is the environment I grew up in.

The film looks at how classism and racism shape people’s behavior, extending even to animals. It also touches on motherhood in its different forms, both human and animal. I approach these themes subtly, especially within a context of occupation, where criticism is often expressed through implication rather than direct confrontation.

I use humor to approach heavier themes, creating space for the audience to connect. I once met someone who told me not to make sad films, because life is already heavy for us as Palestinians. I laughed, knowing that sadness would still find its way into my work, but his words stayed with me. Since then, when my stories are sad, I try to leave room for humor, allowing people to laugh before the sadness arrives.
